Story Arcs, Coffee and Villains

I spent some time in my favorite coffee shop today just brainstorming and refining my story arc. As I went through my checklists, I realized that for some things I have to take it up a notch. For others, I have more done than I thought.  That was a nice feeling.

The hardest thing I’ve had to deal with, though, is creating villains. Since I don’t like conflict in real life, I’ve really had to get into a new mindset to work with these rascals. I read a great article on villains in the Writers Chronicle recently which really helped, if you’re struggling with the same problem.

Now it seems, my villains have proliferated, and I’m starting to have some fun with them. They can say and do things I may have always wanted to, but am constrained from socially. Today, there was a very annoying customer in my favorite coffee shop, and I pictured what one of my villains would do. It made me feel a lot less irritated….
